Baden-Württemberg is the only state in Germany with six universities that focus exclusively on the educational sciences. The universities of education (Pädagogische Hochschulen, PH) are located in Freiburg, Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, Ludwigsburg, Schwäbisch Gmünd and Weingarten.
Exclusive focus on education
While other states integrated the educational sciences with other universities in the 1970s and 1980s, Baden-Württemberg kept the universities of education separate so that the sciences of teaching and learning could be further professionalized through research and high-level academic work.
The courses prepare you for teaching careers by combining knowledge in educational theory with methodology, subject knowledge and classroom teaching skills. While research plays an important role, it is integrated with a strong focus on practice and validation in real-life teaching situations.
