How to become a professor in Germany

Outstanding scientific work and several other qualifications are required for a professorship in Baden-Württemberg. Here are the most common requirements.

Becoming a professor is often a much-desired career goal of young researchers and scientists. There are several paths that lead to a professorship.

After the completion of your doctorate, you need to acquire research and – for most universities – teaching experience. Depending on the research focus and the type of professorship you’re aiming for, the required qualifications can vary substantially.

At traditional universities, a junior professorship or team leadership of a junior research team can be the most straight forward paths to becoming a professor. Having done international research, having completed a habilitation treatise and teaching experience are also often required.

For a professorship at a university of applied sciences, significant industry experience is almost always necessary. Research institutes may place greater emphasis on publications in highly respected international journals and research in international research teams. The requirements also differ for tenure-track and non-tenure track positions.
